The FACTS
Vancouver Home Gardens was started so that there was a place to teach people how to grow food.
We wanted nutrient-dense food, grown in the city that we lived in and set out to learn how to efficiently grow vegetables from organic vegetable farmers.
Take our classes and learn how to garden your space, no matter how small, so that you can eat nutrient dense, organic food at home.
We're talking hyper-local. We're talking from your yard.
We focus on transforming yards into home gardens because we know that efficiently planned garden spaces can push out a lot of produce - even if you're in the middle of the city.
We offer you the tools (both virtual and physical) to learn how to farm your yard so that you can DIY (Do It Yourself). We also offer physical assistance in getting gardens up and running.
Take our classes, DIY what you feel comfortable with doing, and bring us in for what you need.
Let's make your garden work for you, no matter how small.
You can do this.
This is the moment.
Part of why we started Vancouver Home Gardens was because you don't need a large area to grow a lot of produce.
Take our How To Start A Garden Plot course to learn what kind of space you need, and how to use your garden space efficiently.
Ideally you can fit at least one 30" (76.2 cm) wide row. If you can do three or four 30" rows, that's super.
With our courses, I’ll teach you how to plan and use your space efficiently.
Check out our About section (https://vancouverhomegardens.wixsite.com/vancouverhomegardens/about)for more motivation.
Our classes are available to everyone.
Anyone who has decent mobility and decent fine motor skills and can do this. Gardening is a physical activity that involves standing, bending over, kneeling, etc. Tools like hand trowels, shovels, and rakes need to be used, along with harvest scissors or knives.
We do specialize in in-ground gardens, but many of the techniques (seed starting, plant spacing, watering, harvesting/storage, etc.) are the same for raised bed gardening.
It’s not free, but it’s also not too expensive. With every new hobby, there are things to purchase. Our promise to you is that we won’t recommend anything that’s unnecessary. Our five years of farming experience has shown us the tools and supplies that are truly helpful.
Don’t go running to the store until you get a copy of our free What Do I Need? checklist that comes with the How To Start A Garden Plot course.
The answer is two fold:
1) The space.
Do you have a sunny patch?
- A shady spot can still work and we think that it's worth trying, but you may have to fine-tune what grows well there. If you don't, does a neighbor, coworker, or family member? Maybe you can garden there!
2) In order to take the classes, you will need a phone, computer, or tablet along with a place with an internet connection so that you can learn how to do this!
We have so many photos to share with you of each step.
We understand that a passion can turn into something wonderful that's also sustainable, and we also understand that sometimes life gets in the way.
If you truly can't garden anymore, you can plant grass seed again.
If you need to put the garden to bed for a season, or even a full year, that's possible too. In our How To Start A Garden Class we teach how to shut the garden beds down for an extended period of time.
We do!
We teach these live, and then we send out a recording to those that signed up. We want you to have the resource that you paid for.
You’re welcome to purchase the recording if you can’t make the class, but we do have the pricing set to be (much) cheaper if you attend the virtual classes live.
We offer each class multiple times a year.
We really believe that you can!
We started from a patch of grass with a bunch of weeds mixed throughout, and we built a whole farm.
Let us show you how easy it is to do this!
It's grow time.
